This famous game’s name is derived from a French word which means small wheel. Although the meaning of the word is clear, the real origin of the game itself is somewhat mysterious and vague. There were some reports saying that Blaise Pascal, a very famous 17th century French mathematician, physicist and inventor, started it all when he invented the roulette wheel.

However, Pascal wasn’t trying to create a casino game back then. What he wanted to invent in 1655 was a perpetual motion machine.

Unfortunately, his attempt to invent the said machine failed but the good thing was the process he used gave birth to Roulette – one of the most famous casino games in the world.

Invention of Zero

Zero was non-existent on the Roulette wheel until the mid-19th century. Actually, the Pascal’s Roulette wheel stayed the same for the succeeding centuries.

However, this changed in 1842 when Francois and Lois Blanc designed a Roulette wheel with a single zero on it, specifically made for King Charles III of Monaco. This new wheel with a zero, which was introduced by Charles to alleviate his regions’s financial problems, became a massive hit.

In fact, the wheel created a lot of revenues for Monaco, and it quickly became an important symbol for Monte Carlo’s culture of upscale gambling. The famous game was then brought to United States in the early 1800s.

When it hit America, the single “0” modification of the game was rejected and the two zeros “00” were eventually returned to the Roulette wheel. This casino game gained much popularity in USA during the California Gold Rush.
